The Author
Nathaniel H. Benjamin
Nathaniel H. Benjamin is a people development executive, executive coach, organizational strategist, and speaker whose work sits at the intersection of strategic leadership and genuine human development. He is the President and CEO of Vertical Works, a people development consulting firm, where he works with nonprofits, educational institutions, and mission-driven organizations through fractional CHRO services, leadership coaching, organizational strategy, and speaking and training engagements.
Over a career spanning more than 25 years, Nathaniel has served in executive people leadership roles at some of the most consequential institutions in American public life, including C-suite appointments as a Chief People Officer and Senior Vice President of Human Resources. He has also built organizational functions from the ground up, most notably standing up an office of civil rights and culture within a large national service network. Across these roles he has managed budgets ranging from $2 million to $32 million, led teams of up to 80 HR professionals, and advised Chairmen, CEOs, and executive leaders on enterprise-wide human capital strategy and culture transformation.
Strategy with a Heartbeat was not developed in a research laboratory or a consulting firm. It was forged across deep study of leadership, business, and industry, more than two decades of leading organizations through challenge and change, coaching executives navigating the tension between analytical rigor and human reality, and sitting with the personal health crisis that ultimately crystallized the cardiac leadership framework at the book’s center.
